I had an interesting voicemail the other day from someone who identified himself as Jerry Renault (sp?). Renault called to comment on my article last week about the recent hate crime robbery in Oak Lawn. Renault said he liked the story, and thought it was well-written and contained lot of good information. But then he added that he was deeply offended by my decision to include the anti-gay slurs that were allegedly used by the suspects as they beat the victim. According to court documents, the suspects were yelling things like, “You gay-ass motherfucker, punk-ass bitch.”
“I think it was highly unprofessional and irresponsible for you to actually print these words that these thugs chose to use,” Renault said in the voicemail. “It makes it look as if this article was written by a thug. As a Christian man, I’m highly offended by your article and the way you chose to write it. I know that probably doesn’t make any difference to you, but I just wanted to let you know how highly offended I was by your article.â€
Well, at least he’s right about the last part! In case you’re wondering, though, Dallas Voice don’t generally print profanity unless it’s part of a direct quotation and there’s a compelling reason for it. However, I can think of no more compelling reason than to convey the circumstances of an alleged anti-gay hate crime. Besides, what type of right-wing, “family values” newspaper did Renault think he was reading, The Dallas Morning News?
